All You Need To Know About Melton Hill Lake

Melton Hill Lake is surrounded by Anderson, Knox, Roane and Loudon counties in East Tennessee. It covers 5,690 acres, 173 miles of shoreline and runs 57 miles in length from Melton Hill Dam to Norris Lake Dam. The main town you will see is mainly Oak Ridge, but also Clinton, Lenoir City, and also Knoxville. There is lots of shopping in Oak Ridge with a large Kroger Marketplace, Food City, weekly Farmer’s Market, and more. Oak Ridge is part of the Knoxville metro area and is the site of Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Y-12 National Security Complex, scientific and technological developments that play crucial roles in the city’s economy and culture in general.

Melton Hill Dam stands 103 feet high. It stretches 1,020 feet across the Clinch River. The reservoir provides nearly 193 miles of shoreline and 5,470 acres of water surface for recreation. Melton Hill is the only dam in the tributary reservoir system with a navigation lock and is considered a run-of-river reservoir, meaning that water is passed through the reservoir without being stored long term. The water level fluctuates about four feet on a daily basis.

If you want to take a break from the water, there is a peaceful 5.6-mile waterfront greenway great for walking, running, and biking. Other family-friendly amenities include a volleyball court, sheltered picnic tables, playground, and pavilion.
